HighCom plugin for Cooledit

Why ?

If you are like me, you have a lot of old cassette-tape recordings with highcom noisereduction. You would like to convert them to mp3-files. In the process you also like to correct some problems like noise and frequency respons.
Of cource you could use your old highcom-taperecorder, but there are reasons not to:
  • You don't have a working highcom tape-recorder anymore.
  • You like to add some corrections before the expanding (decoding) process.

Requirements

This plug-in is designed for Cooledit pro 1.2 from Syntrillium, now for Cooledit 2000 as well.

Use

  • Record to HD, without any noise reduction enabled.
Make sure that tape head (azimuth) and speed are correct adjusted. Also check that you don't have to much hum from transformers near by
  • [optional] Use cooledit to remove tape-hiss.
Don't try to remove noise origined before the highcom encoding, this will cource an undesired effect.
  • [optional] Make frequency correction with parametric equalizer.
  • Use the Highcom plugin.
  • [optional] Additional frequency correction.
Screenshot Graph showing the parameters
Expanding factor I meassured this to 1.9 times, you probaly don't want to change this
Max limit This is the most important number. It sets the level of the input and it should match your recording. It must be adjusted on a very low level recording, like on a long fade-out
Range I meassured this to 29dB, you probaly don't want to change this
Additional gain Set this to adjust the output level. If you use 32-bit sampletype you can always do a normalize without additional loss. If you use 16-bit, you must set this to get as close to 0 dB as possible

Installation

1. Extract the <highcom.xfm> to cooledit's plugin folder. The exact folder name may vary. Try looking for <c:\program files\coolpro>. Verify that this is where the other *.xfm resides.

2. Delete the file <xfm.dat> in the same folder. This will make cooledit scan for plugins next time it is started. On some systems (NT, XP PRO) this file can be found in Documents and setting folder.

Uninstallation

1. Delete <highcom.xfm>
2. Delete <xfm.dat>
3. The keycode is stored in regestry at \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PyramideDataDK\HighCom
It can be removed with regedit. (If you don't know what that is, please just leave it there. It will not harm anyone)
Please tell me your expirience with this software, as well as any bugs.
